World population from 1950 to 2100, combined with continents and top 10 countries by population
Показать описание
The world population has already increased from 2.5 billion in 1950 to 7.8 billion in 2020. It will further grow to 9.7 billion in 2050 and near 11 billion in 2100 (under medium projections).
The expected global population growth is projected to be largely driven by increases in Asia and particularly in Africa. While the Asian population is expected to peak by 2050, Africa’s population is projected to grow strongly and continuously, from 1.3 billion in 2020 to about 4.3 billion by 2100.
Five out of the ten most populous countries in the world are located in Asia presently, but the picture will look different in 2100, when five African countries – Nigeria, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Egypt and Congo – will be among the world’s ten largest. In 1950, four European countries (Russia, Germany, United Kingdom and Italy) were still among the world’s largest. That number decreased to one in 2020 (Russia) and will have decreased to none in 2100. Only United States is projected to be among the top 10 largest countries in 2100 outside Africa and Asia.
