Bantu, calcium & iron, epidemiology lecture #1

Показать описание
Bantu women have an average of 9 or 10 children. Nurse each child an average of 2 years. Eat 350 mg/day calcium (equivalent to about one glass of milk). Adult Bantu women do not eat any dairy. Despite this high demand for calcium, and relatively low intake of calcium, they have virtually zero problem with osteoporosis. Key point is that our body is good at managing calcium based on any naturally occurring diet. Calcium supplements are overrated, and have fallen out of favor.
The Bantu were skilled at working with iron. They cooked with iron cookware. Iron cookware led to an excess of iron getting into the food. This led to iron overload in the men. Unless a person has an iron deficiency, they probably don't need to seek iron at all. Many multivitamins contain iron. Many foods are fortified with iron. These should be avoided, unless told otherwise by your health care provider. Many persons in old age are iron overloaded, which can lead to ferrous redox cycling, and oxidative stress; increases risk of neurodegeneration, and cognitive impairment.
