In this one, Sam attempts to use experimental Gaussian Splat technology to film in locations he wouldn't otherwise have permission to use.

The real heist was having corridor fund Sam's vacation to Universal Studios.

Every time I watch one of these breakdowns, I gain a new level of respect for VFX artists. Corridor Crew, you make magic look easy!

I love the videos Sam makes with his experiments and proof of concepts. They are really good and you don't see this kind of content on any other channel these days. Keep up the good work Sam!

These videos have a running theme of Jake going "Yeah that'd be unethical and possibly illegal" and Sam going "Oh no! Anyways"

Probably my favourite "bit" from Sam is when he puts on a second pair of sunglasses or takes off a pair of sunglasses to reveal a pair underneath. It's corny yet so hilarious

Wren: This is how big this geek thing actually is! 🤩

Jordan: You can do this crazy effect with this program!🤯

Niko: What if this piece of media was like this?😮

Sam: This is how I committed felony! 😃

Correction: Gaussian Splats are not AI. You might have confused the explanation with NeRF. GS are a pointcloud-like representation of a scene that is calculated (in very simple terms) by optimizing the parameters of each point for visual error compared to the photograph images. And unlike classical pointclouds, these splats have varying color based on view direction, which allows for capturing phenomena like reflections or refraction.
(As far as I know, I am not an expert on GS, just a graphics programming student).

You cannot have THAT goatee and go to a children's theme park and start filming. lol

One small issue: At 1:14 it gets mentioned that gaussian splats are AI-based. This is not the case.

I believe gaussian splatting gets mixed up here with neural radiance fields.
Essentially, both methods are a form a volume rendering techniques. What you essentially do is you need to compute an approximation of density and color for every point in a volume depending on the looking angle.

Gaussian splatting uses 3D gaussians with spherical harmonics for that (basically blurred dots in space that change the color depending on the looking angle). And while some implementations use machine learning models to make the splats align faster to the original image, the core concept of gaussian splats only utilizes stochastic gradient descent and doesn't depend on neural networks.

In contrast to that, neural radiance fields (NeRF) utilize a deep neural network for this task. You train a model in which you feed 5 inputs, the position of the point in the volume you want to sample, and the angle of incidence (the looking direction). From that the model gives you 4 values (the color and the density of the volume at that point).

During rendering, you step from the camera through the volume and sample these values for every pixel (with gaussian splatting some tricks can be used to make it render faster). From that you can get the rendered image.

This is gonna be so useful for pickups. Like capture the set as a backup. And if you miss anything you can green screen the actor in for a shot or whatever that you missed or need once you see it in the edit. As low budget filmmakers, paying a location is one of the most expensive things which makes reshoots for pickups unachievable. Obviously this tech isn’t there yet for a whole movie, but for a short shot here and there it’ll be perfect for

Gaussian splats are such a cool concept imo, I can totally see it being used more in film productions once it's ready

Mentioned a lawyer, my brain got excited about a Legal Eagle crossover. Forgot Jake was in legal too.

The legal talk reminds me of the debacle around these guy(s) about 8 years ago who took photos of something in the british museum, made a model with photogrammetry and printed it and the museum was not happy about it but the law didn't exactly cover it

Absolutely wild how far all this has evolved. 10 years ago all this was just a dream stories that film people told each other while being drunk "dude, imagine if, we could like, film the Louvre interior and use it as 3D world" - "dude, building this in 3D out of video frames would take like, i dont know, thousand hours"
