I have had this exact car for about five months now and it's outstanding. Without charging I average 55 mpg, and that's highway heavy, I usually get 48 miles from a full charge. It won't hold a 4x8, but I have had 3x5 sheets of hardy backer in it, and 8 foot lengths of construction lumber (front passenger seat folds flat), hatch closed, no problem. It's fun to drive when you want to, highway speed passing is especially impressive, and when you don't the driver assistance package is really good. I got it under MSRP and benefited from a state tax incentive in addition--that took some aggressive negotiation with my local dealer, but it happened for me anyway. The best use case for a PHEV is is you have high electric rates but limited access to free charging, with this car I can take advantage of the free charging when available and drive really cheaply on gasoline when it's not. I drive a lot, with my previous car, a Civic, transportation fuel was a huge expense for me, now it's negligible.

I have never before encountered a car that arrives with plastic hub caps, yet, has a nice set of alloy wheels underneath. I was amazed with what I found after taking off one cover. Great car, 4, 061Km and used just one tank of fuel so far. Much cheaper to charge here than to buy gas ($6.50 a gallon here).

We own a Toyota Prius 2005. One can seat decently in the front seats, and the rear ones. There's plenty of leg room in the rear. The driver easily can plop his rear end on the seat coming from outside, no need to bend the neck while pulling the head inside. Getting in and out in the front is easy like in and out a minivan - most people do not touch the A pillar while getting the head in and out.
I wanted a PHEV. Our old timer started requiring expensive repairs due to failing old modules. Yet, the modern Prius entirely kills the space inside, mind you, with the same overall car length. It's a total no go for our family due to its "sleekness".

Some one on yt put on high performance tires on it and said the handling was as good as a GTi.

I had a 2018 Honda clarity which was a main competitor to this. I would get 48 miles electric making my commute all EV miles. 383 range with a six gallon tank. I loved that car. Sold it because of going work from home due to Covid. Would have loved to see Honda make a CRV version of it even at 40 miles. Average American commute is 19 miles round trip

In Ontario, Canada, there is a 3-year waiting list for people who want to buy a Prius Prime of any grade.

56? The Camry hybrid gets about 51. Fine if you're trying to go cheaper, so it's a better value proposition, but if the savings isn't the consideration why this over a Camry?

Check your facts, Nathan. The previous version of the Prime had a lower Cd than this version. Many automotive journalists think that because the new one looks sleeker and is lower, it's more slippery. Not. The old one's Cd is 0.25. The new one's is 0.27. The old one's MPGe is 133. The new one 's is 114. The old version had less range, but was more efficient.

I've been eyeing this car for a while now, and as a fellow big guy myself, I am SO thankful for your review of the passenger and driver headspace and leg space. Many, many youtubers I have watched sold me on this car, but neglected to mention the restricted headspace and leg space for the big guys. I'll pass on this car. I love your review!

I mentioned this in a TFL review of the Infiniti QX, in the 20's car design has really been truly incredible up to this point. So many gorgeous, beautiful, straight up sexy auto designs lately. Never thought I'd say this about a Prius, but this is a rather sexy car. In the 80's through to the 2010's car design was becoming more and more terrible every year, with the 10's being almost completely horrible. Since 2020 though there have been some real breathtaking vehicles, this is one of those in my opinion. Keep in mind I remember the debut of the second generation Prius, which was almost uncomfortable to look at in comparison to this new one.

GM was so much further ahead with the Volt and then they killed it....

Ike Gauntlet that Prius Prime. Compare with the regular Prius or other plug in hybrids.

You're repeating the common misunderstanding/assumption that the new design is more aerodynamic. It is less aerodynamic than earlier versions. They sacrificed both interior space and aerodynamics for better looks. The higher roofline that peaked just behind the driver is more aerodynamic, but gave it the odd shape that people find unattractive.

PHEVs have such a narrow use case. I had the king of PHEVs, a volt. I liked it when I didn’t have an EV but I found that it was a perfect short range EV dragging around a mediocre ICE. If 30-40 miles of range is a good number for you an EV would be even better.

35k you might as well get the base model 3 for 38k or the base model Y for 35k after the tax credit. Both of those are better in every way 😅

Seems like a great option for people that can’t charge at home. Wait, oops, you still need to charge it??? Maybe just get a Model 3 or Camry.
