Atlatl Demonstration

Melissa Timo, outreach coordinator for the Florida Public Archaeology Network's Southwest Region, demonstrates how to use an atlatl, an ancient tool that uses the force of leverage to propel a large dart much faster and farther than it could be thrown by hand alone.

Great demonstration Melissa Timo & FGCU team. The "second elbow" at the wrist is an interesting feature. I think you might have potential to resurrect this ancient activity into a modern sport.

She was aiming at the wrong target. There was someone waiting to ambush her. I'm surprised she didn't see them crouching down with the blue shirt on. I wonder if that's why the video was so short! They got her!

The part of this weapon held by the hand is called an "at-la-tl". The "a" in "la" is pronounced exactly like the "a" of the word "at". The "tl" is pronounced as if you added a "u" between the "t" and "l" letters, so the resulting pronunciation would sound like at-la-tull, not "atl-atl".

Rule number one if she cant pronounce it she doesnt know how to use it. My primitive skills instructor, John McPherson could use an atlatl (said as Ought-Lot-Toll) to hit a dinner plate at near 100m
