On a Christmas Evening, I had the pleasure to meet Ennio Morricone as a guest in the home of maestro Riccardo Muti. We talked about his art, particularly his powerful melodies, which have always fascinated me. Morricone described his soundtracks as the soul of the films, as they are the elements that enhance the viewer’s empathetic emotions for the characters on screen … ”A film is what we see and hear but music represents the unsaid and the unseen”
I felt I needed to record this album in the historic Forum Studios, where many of the best scores of Italian cinema were recorded. I recorded in collaboration with the Roma Sinfonietta, the same orchestra that Morricone used for his greatest film scores, attempting to reproduce the same orchestral colors.
During the recording session, I could feel his spiritual presence and guidance … It was very emotional.
The music of Nino Rota has a profoundly Mediterranean flavour, with infusions of traditional motifs and rhythms; it is a melting - pot of classical music, opera, and popular music.
I never met Nino Rota in person, but I had the privilege to visit the Istituto per la Musica della Fondazione Cini, in Venice, where I studied the composer’s original manuscripts and the handwritten annotations that maestro Rota and Francis Ford Coppola made while filming The Godfather.
I feel connected to this music. In Fellini’s masterpiece Amarcord, Rota represents my childhood, my people, and my region. The score recalls the region of Romagna, where I grew up, with my family and still live.
The film themes in this album capture the magical combination of romance, melancoly friendship, and violence.
This album is a tribute to the Italian spirit, to my spirit, expressed through a musical journey: Postcards from Italy.
