How Does the Brain Encode Trauma? | Ask a Psychologist with Dr. Kate Truitt

The brain encodes trauma when it encounters significant threats, known as unconditioned threat stimuli, which are built into our brain to help keep us safe.

When the brain detects a serious threat, it can label the experience as traumatic. Trauma can also occur if core values are challenged, such as whether we feel safe, lovable, or capable of success. If these values are threatened, the brain alters how it perceives and reacts to similar situations in the future.

This change can lead to increased stress and impact our everyday behavior.
