Built between 1638 and 1648 by Shahjahan as part of his new city, the Red Fort is one of Delhi’s best known landmarks. Clad in red sandstone with white marble, it was more of a residential palace for the royal family. The river Yamuna once flowed between the Red Fort and Salimgarh, which is now separated by the Outer Ring Road. A railway bridge now connects the two with trains travelling to nearby Old Delhi Railway Station. The Prime Minister of India addresses the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort every year on the 15th of August on the occasion of Independence day.
