World AIDS Day is a yearly event occurring on the 1st December where we support all those with HIV/AIDS and remember all those lost to the disease. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the bodies immune system. If not treated it can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) it does not discriminate with who can contract it. It’s no longer a death sentence. Thanks to the hard work of scientists and medical professionals HIV can be controlled with Antiretroviral Drugs which stop the virus replicating in the body. It can also be prevented with safe sex and medicines such as PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) Those with HIV face stigma and discrimination because of their disease. It’s important to know that HIV is not spread through the air or via touch. It’s transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood, semen, or vaginal fluids, but not through saliva. With effective treatment HIV cannot be spread.
