Cale's a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, he learned the piano from the age six and joined the Welsh Youth Orchestra aged fourteen, where he picked up the viola snd several other instruments.
Cale has several orchestrated recordings, The Academy In Peril and Words For The Dying are soley neo-classical albums. He also composed various filmscores, such as American Psycho, Basquiat, I Shot Andy Warhol, Something Wild, Paris s'eveille, 23 Solo Pieces for La Naissance de l'Amour and plenty more, where he composed piano-, chamber- and neo-classical music.
Some of these recordings are up here on YT.

I met John Cale at the Living Room in Providence RI.... really nice guy, .... he had his wife and her baby with him on tour so we got to meet her too.... they were both so nice to us and the show was fantastic....he did his usual thing at the end of Fear and Waiting for the Man where he goes ballistic screaming and pounding on the piano like a maniac....a show I will never forget
