There are instances where one may be so passionate and over-engaged technically in their field that when shifting to a new opportunity it is difficult to pause and retrieve these "common-sense" communication skills. Thank you for your video. Helped clear a memory block that apparently formed over the years. Really reminded me of the proper way to approach interviewing. Makes me consider seeking an interview coach to help refresh that area of my communication skills. The example responses were well drafted; as an engineer that has interviewed others for software engineering positions in the past, those types of responses would of pique my interests.

Interesting. What you described, namely communication and ability to explain technicalities in simple terms is rather something which I would imagine under role of Business Analysts. At least, in my company this was covered by them as it was difficult to expect from SW Devs to have such communication skills that they would be able to represent their products in front of the clients.

This is all very thorough and informative. My concern is how to approach a software engineer interview if this is my very first role. I'm just getting started in my career, and as such I lack any prior work experience in this area. What are some useful tips and tricks you can provide to me that will help me out along the way?

As someone who has interviewed dozens of software engineers and given input to managers, this is pretty good. The only that I would be wary of is the "I work too hard, have trouble with work life balance, blah blah" because I'll never believe it if someone says it. However, I would also never ask a candidate what their greatest weakness is.

Got an interview on monday. Granted, it's my first one ever and that I have taken a pretty unorthodox way and I possess a life story, that is vastly different than an overwhelming majority (if not unique) so the deck is not necessarily stacked in my favor on the first try - not everyone have their life going as planned or the way they want to. With that said, I do have some schooling at a university (almost completed bachelors) and I am "here" now, ready so to speak to develop personally. I wanted to be up front with that, but I will take some of the material in this video with me and let you know after monday, how it went. Not everything in this video applies to my experience, as a developer or as life experiences, thus, using some of the content in this video would be lying, although I have heard from more than one person that a good mantra to have is to "fake it, until you make it" - meaning, not lying, but possessing a broad confidence in oneself and one's own abilities. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I'm not really stressed about the interview as such, but I am nervous about freezing up when having to do some "white board coding" which I suspect I will be facing.
