Commenters are calling this indentured servitude, but, this is way worse. My wife's Welsh ancestors came to America in the 1600's as indentured servants. They served the wealthy British family for so many years and started their independent life. Indentured servitude was all above-board and very often the servants would stay on with the family after their term of service ended.
