A very interesting piece, and certainly a curious item to have on your desk. It looks great.

This is a very interesting piece.
In what historical scenes was this Traveler's Inkwell used, and by whom? It's really fun to think about it.
This piece also gives a sense of "History" and "Story".

Check the hinges. Many times you can tell whether an item is actually antique by the hinges because for a lack of a better word, the "nails" are unlike anything used today. Also from speaking to an antique dealer slight variations in the pattern (which Ottoman tended to use a floral or vine/ geometric engravings) and "flaws" represent the item to be handmade. Which if that is the case, he informed me that typically that indicates an older piece. As far as hallmarks are concerned, I know some have them which is extremely helpful but unfortunately many do not. I have what we believe to be 19th century, maybe earlier, Ottoman brass inkwell. Very similar to yours. Although, mine is fully functional, the pen compartment lid dies not open fully as yours does. And due to its age, I am afraid to force it. I hope this may have helped
