Neoplan Evolution (1935 - 2022)

►The company was founded by Gottlob Auwärter in Stuttgart in 1935, and manufactured bodywork for bus and truck chassis. From the very beginning, the designs of the buses produced were considered stylish. In 1957, air suspension was made available, improving the ride of the bus for the passenger.

In 1961, a new bus design, the Hamburg, was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. At a time when most coaches were rounded, bulbous or streamlined, the new design had clear-cut lines with edges and large windows.

In 1964, the founder's second son, Konrad Auwärter, developed a double-deck bus design for a service bus as part of his dissertation. The 'Do-Bus' design had low weight, and could carry over 100 passengers. This vehicle was known as the Skyliner,.

In 1971, the Cityliner was introduced to the public. This design had a passenger platform above the driver's cab, and included an onboard toilet. In 1973, the Jetliner was introduced, featuring a large one-piece windshield, with the driver and door windows sloping from the passenger window line down to the bottom of the windshield level.

In 1975, the Jumbocruiser was launched, a double-deck articulated coach 18 metres long and 4 metres high. The Spaceliner, introduced in 1979 took the Cityliner concept of passenger floor level above the driver, and extended the actual floor above the cab.

The Metroliner was introduced in 1988. This vehicle was the first full monocoque bus in the world, requiring no separate chassis or skeleton.

In 1992, the 15 metres four-axle Megaliner was introduced, prompting a change in European Union regulations to allow non-articulated vehicles greater than 12 metres in length.

NEOPLAN launched the Starliner in 1996 – a model that remains representative of the brand to this day. A progressive design and an innovative safety concept characterise this company star. It resulted in the Starliner being named the ‘Coach of the Year 2000’ and becoming an image carrier for many fleets of buses.

The new Tourliner that hit the roads in 2003 was a NEOPLAN newcomer that stood out particularly for its excellent price-performance ratio.

The new NEOPLAN Individual line launched in 2009 described a new form of exclusivity and emotionality. Customised refinements in design and function took the NEOPLAN Starliner and Cityliner coaches to a completely new level.

NEOPLAN presented an innovative product concept in 2010 – also to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The Starliner defined itself as the most exclusive of coaches bearing the NEOPLAN name. The best-selling Cityliner also presented itself in a modern design that employed the latest technology. The entirely revamped Skyliner was presented at the 2010 International Motor Show Germany.

The current product range, comprising the NEOPLAN Tourliner, Cityliner and Skyliner, is an impressive line-up of exclusive vehicles offering innovative features and eye-catching designs that attract admiring looks everywhere they go.

Always Neoplan extreme futuristic styling and passengers love them - however in my experience I'm not sure if the bodywork and interiors wear too well in heavy intensive usage compared to some other manufacturers.

Excellent job making a complete timeline of Neoplan.
But I found two mistakes.
The first one is of the Starliner of 2005; the photo you added (Van Gerwen Reizen) is of a later model, which came around 2009 and has different fender design in relation to the 2005 model.
Secondly, at the 2016 mark, you mention the Cityliner L, but the photo (Dr. Richard) is actually a Cityliner C; the main difference between the C and the L can be seen behind the rear wheels, a compartment that makes most of the extra meter length.
Other than these, everything looks very good.

I have a question, why are you listing the top speed of these buses? Aren't buses have a limiter that controls how fast the bus can go? Also, it would be nice to know how many cylinders the engine has, especially when it comes to buses and trucks.

Neoplan is King of everything in transits too in Southeast Asia just rebadged Chinese Golden Dragons, but we have dozens of old and new Neoplans running around. Known as king of reliability and longevity. More money in good ways to serve better comfort for the value. No. 1 German technology.
