Time to Buy: Sega Genesis

The Super Nintendo's great competitor, the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, is a great and reasonably affordable system, if you want to play 16bit games on legit hardware.

The Sega CD is actually worth having, if you ignore the FMV junk there are actually a lot of good games for it, and zero piracy protection so they are very easy to burn. As well as new indie releases.

I grew up a Nintendo fanboy. But like 4 years ago, I got my first Sega Genesis. And the system is amazing. My Sega collation has gotten bigger than my Nintendo collation. I am now a proud owner of the Mast System, Genesis 2, Sega CD, The Nomad, Saturn, Dreamcast and the Game Gear. I still have my Nintendo stuff, games and systems. But way more Sega game now then Nintendo.

The Genesis also had some great shmups like MUSHA Aleste, Arrow Flash, Battle Mania Daiginjou, Panorama Cotton, Super Fantasy Zone, Thunder Force IV, Advanced Gley Lancer Busterhawk, and Burning Force just to name a few. There's also the run n gun game Gunstar Heroes which is top tier imo.

I'm glad that I still have my Genesis consoles. It was and still is one of the greatest consoles of all time.

I just wanted to add that the SOUND of the genesis is amazing! Since it uses a synthesizer instead of a sampler for its music (although it was able to play limited sound samples) there are some soundtracks that are truly mind blowing on the genesis that would not have been possible on the SNES. Streets of Rage 2, Vectorman, Sonic 3, Strider, Tides of Time, Lightening Force, and so many others used and abused the built-in yamaha synthesizer to create chip-tune perfection. It wasn't as good at traditional instruments as the sample-based SNES, so it would never be able to play e.g. Stickerbush Symphony, but its unique sound is definitly one of my favorite things about the console.

Genesis = Darth Vader
Super Nintendo = Luke Skywalker

I own both a Model 1 Genesis (High Definition Graphics VA6 board revision) and a 2-Chip Super Famicom, and I have to say my Genesis does get slightly more play time. I find that most games on SNES/SFC just haven't aged as well due to their lower framerate and lower resolution graphics. That being said, though, you don't get Star Fox, Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, or Super Castlevania IV on the Genesis, as much as you don't get Sonic, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, After Burner, or Outrun on the Super Nintendo.
Back to the topic of the Genesis, though, it's amazing what a technical marvel it was. It was capable of games that are fast even by today's standards, super-crisp RGB output, and even polygons without a helper chip on the cartridge as proven with Star Cruiser. What's even more amazing as that it was able to do all of this at around the same price as the SNES and Turbografx-16, due to using the widely available Motorola 68000 cpu and Zilog Z80 secondary cpu along with the Yamaha YM2612 and Texas Instruments SN76489A soundchips. It was essentially a consolized Sega System-16 arcade machine for the same price as other home systems, which is incredible. If Nintendo wasn't so good at marketing themselves, I don't think they would have stood a chance against the Genesis.

Actually SNES was popular in US and Japan, in Europe and Brazil was SEGA all the way. Even today SEGA is big in Brazil with knock offs still selling.

Hate to break it to everyone, but time to buy MD/Genesis games was 10-15 years ago.

This was an odd video, it's labeled as time to buy, but you talked about the history and background of the genesis and didn't really make an argument on why to buy other than its cheap.

Sega needs to make consoles again. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are so boring.

Rocket Knight Adventures actually had a superior version on the genesis.
It was the first game I picked up with the system, and I recommend playing it on a crt!
