What is API Management? And Where is it Going?

"API Management" is a frequently used term, but depending on the context, it can mean different things. There's not a single "right" or "wrong" explanation of what it means. But it is important to be aware of the different interpretations so that when talking API management, everybody understands what the conversation is about.

In order to better understand the different meanings of the term, it is helpful to think about how the API space has developed. In this video, we look at the evolution of the API space, and how the concept of API management has evolved accordingly. We see that it started with technical API management, then moved on to API lifecycle management, and currently has further matured to be about API product management. We also make the prediction that API product marketing is the next logical step of this evolution, because in the end, API success is a direct result of API consumption, so being more strategic about how to manage and drive consumption is important.
