ChatGPT has introduced support for plugins, which are tools that can enhance the functionality of the language model with safety as a core principle. Plugins can help ChatGPT access up-to-date information, run computations, or use third-party services. Initially, ChatGPT will roll out plugins to a small set of users to study their real-world use, impact, and safety and alignment challenges. Users have been asking for plugins since ChatGPT's launch, and many developers are experimenting with similar ideas because they unlock a vast range of possible use cases.

Plugin developers who have been invited off the waitlist can use ChatGPT's documentation to build a plugin for the language model. The first plugins have been created by various companies, including Expedia, FiscalNote, Instacart, KAYAK, Klarna, Milo, OpenTable, Shopify, Slack, Speak, Wolfram, and Zapier. ChatGPT is also hosting two plugins, a web browser, and code interpreter. The code for a knowledge base retrieval plugin has been open-sourced and can be self-hosted by any developer.

ChatGPT plans to gradually enable plugins for users and developers, beginning with ChatGPT Plus subscribers. As the deployment of plugins continues, ChatGPT will iterate on its protocol and enable developers using OpenAI models to integrate plugins into their own applications beyond ChatGPT.

While plugins offer the potential to enhance ChatGPT's utility and tackle various challenges associated with language models, there is a risk that they could increase safety challenges by taking harmful or unintended actions, increasing the capabilities of bad actors who would defraud, mislead, or abuse others. Therefore, ChatGPT has implemented several safeguards to restrict risky plugin behaviors and improve transparency of how and when they operate as part of the user experience. ChatGPT invites researchers to study safety risks or mitigations in this area and has recently open-sourced its Evals framework for plugin-related safety and capability evaluations.
