Can Am Renegade 1000R X-XC vs Can Am Outlander 1000R XT-P, 1000cc 4X4 ATV Shootout. ATVonDemand test riders Chad Westcott and Brent Johnson took a trip to Dirty Turtle Off-Road park in Bedford Ky to put 182 HP of the most powerful, trial focused, 4x4 ATVs head to head. The Can-Am Renegade 1000R X XC and Outlander 1000R XT-P.

Choosing between these machines could be tough. We know we’d be leaving a lot of capability on the table if we went with the Renegade, because the Outlander is an ideal tool for working, hunting, and camping. But how much performance would we leave on the table if we didn’t choose the Renegade and are there any other important differences we might not be considering.

Can-Am tells us they share identically tuned 91 HP Rotax 1000R engines with identical clutching, but we still expected the Renegade to pull out in front based on it’s lighter weight and the fact that it’s a friggen Renegade.

Suspension travel is also identical on the Outlander 1000 and Renegade 1000 with 9.2” up front and 9.9” out back. Fox Podium 1.5 shocks are used on both machines. The Renegade’s Podium RC2 shocks feature all the external adjustments you’d expect from high-end race shocks. The Outlander’s Podium QS3 shocks feature threaded spring preload along with simple intuitive 3-way compression damping settings. Power steering settings are slightly different with the two machines primarily for their different tire sizes.

Identical hydraulic disc brakes stop both machines and do a pretty good job of it too considering our rider and machine combos are nearly a half a ton of Rotax propelled mass.

As we finished our laps and our ride for the day it was pretty obvious to both of us what our decision would be if we were choosing between these machines. We’d opt for the greater utility of the Outlander in XT-P trim and sleep peacefully knowing we weren’t giving up much performance.

But if you're still having trouble deciding between the two keep in mind that Can-Am’s premium options are customizable, and the perfect blend of performance and utility for you could be the Outlander in X-XC trim.

Finally the wait is over as the two fastest 4x4 ATVs on the market head to head! Which would you choose or which one do you own?

I’ve owned them both and I prefer the outlander but they are both nice quads. I had a 2020 1000 renegade XXC and I still own a 2019 outlander 1000 XTP.

I mostly ride on my property in central Florida, mostly muddy trails mixed with some deep sugar sand trails.

The biggest beef I had with the renegade (which I sold last year) was the high center of gravity, it feels like it wants to roll on corner entry. Also, it basically has no storage and the heat coming off the engine was almost intolerable in Florida.

Lastly, the renegade provides almost no mud protection, almost every speck of much hits you coming off the front wheels.

The renegade is lighter, is quicker off the line and turns a little tighter but the performance difference is pretty nominal in my opinion.

The Outlander is simply a more versatile quad. For 9/10 people watching this video, the outlander would be the hands down better choice.

Coming from a Honda foreman and getting the Polaris Sportsman xp1000, I've done more trial maintenance in 6-8 months than I did in 6 years with the honda. I love all the storage space, anchor points on my Sportsman, not to mention the 90hp. great video guys. Having something and not needing it is great, the other not so much!! Utility all the way!!

I went from a Sportsman 850 to the Outty XTP 1000. And I’m loving it!!! The only thing I miss from the sportsman is being able to switch in and out of AWD while moving.

I seriously never thought a 4x4 could keep up with pure sports on the trails until I saw some older guy ripping a 2013 ish renegade. Thing whipped like no one's business

It took me over a month to decide between the two myself. All I knew was that it had to be the 1k and an xmr. I went with the outlander because of the utility side of i. But then later learned that I could have changed the rear rack of the Renegade and it would have served the same purpose for me. An the only thing I don't like so far about the outlander is the long frame. Other than that I am very happy with my choice.

Have you all ridden the Outlander X XC 1000 at all? Wondering if the performance/ride/utility strikes a nice blend of these two machines.

great review. I'm looking for a outlander xt-p comparison with an outlander in that market and can't see to make a choice.

I own a 21 renegade 1k xxc. I weigh 140lbs but ride quite aggressive so I actually stiffened up my high speed compression for the fast stuff and softened my low speed compression for the slow stuff (A simple turn of a flat head and you guys couldve had the renegade softer for the rough stuff). I also added one of can ams many options for racks and added the small rear rack that can carry storage boxes, fuel, and/or a cooler. I prefer nothing on my front fenders as to not block my view of the trail and I like being able to see the ground in front of my tires better. I also go through tight areas so I know if I had the larger fenders of an outlander they wouldve been ripped off or cracked. I added a winch and hitch to the quad so I am able to move trailers around my yard, pull my buddies who break down back to the truck, or winch people out of mud holes or trees off the trail.

Imo the only differences that matter between the two is the outlander has less adjustable suspension but has larger racks and fenders. If you are an aggressive rider I suggest the renegade. If you are just casually trail riding and dont want to get as muddy and/or want to use the quad a good amount for work around the house or on a farm then I suggest the outlander. Both are absolutely amazing machines

I live in a state which I can license this renegade for street use. If purchased, I plan to use the Renegade for street use exclusively. What is the top speed and cruising speed of this unit on the street? I desire this info for the 2024 model year.
