I've used your method and it worked well, the plastic tape part is a really good idea, to put plastic tape under the heat tube to make it wider. Thanks. Only thing... if you put a pen spring as well to the cable, be careful as the spring can cut the rubber material of the cable!

I just made this "McGiver" fix on my wife's tablet cord and it worked like a Thanks so much for posting this. Make sure the pen spring is long. First pen I took apart had a short spring, so I found a pen with a longer spring. Much better. You just saved me at least $15 for a new cord.

If you do this before it breaks, it wont break in the first place. I reinforce all my charger cables the second I get them. Its pretty lame that they don't just make them this way.

This is nice. Now what if you don't have heat shrink what can you replace it with to make the cord work?

I think you're supposed to tape the exposed wire before threading the metal
coil, it keeps the lines from touching, preventing a short.

Great Idea but I stepped it up a notch by eliminating the spring & taping. Instead I used clear vinyl tubing used for air pumps for fish aquariums. I cut a piece about 1" long & carefully sliced it from one end to the other. I then slipped it over the cable butting it against the plastic connector. Finally I slipped on a piece of Heat Shrink tubing over the plastic connector & the tubing & heated tubing making a nice neat fix.

Before i do this the video doesnt show the cord actually charging and i know the cord does technically get repaired but im just curious if thats the purpose of the spring as well or?

Nice idea, but won't the spring short out the exposed wires?  Maybe I'll try the aquarium tubing instead as suggested in one of the comments.
