The benefit of this existing is that it gives pressure for valve and lenovo to increase the ram and battery size of their next gen handhelds.

People keep bringing up customer support without mentioning that this is in the United States. Customer support rules and laws are different outside of the US.

I think the biggest benefit for this is the Screen with VRR. As far as i know its the only handheld with a screen that has Freesync.

Ally X is fine for people that don't own the original, but it's not meant to be an upgrade for people that do. I think people keep getting confused about that.

This isn't Ally 2. It's a slightly higher trim of the original.

I have Asus ROG Ally and had 512GB sd card in it and it runs great. I played Gears of War 1 to 5, Call of duty black ops 1, 2, 3, Cold war and waiting for Black Ops 6, Need For Speed the run as I bought DVD in 2011 in pre order and copied on external HDD, Watch Dogs, Fallout 1 to 4, Cyberpunk 2077, Dead Space Remake and list is go on.
Still this device has juice to run games and there are plenty of games that I have to play. No need to change for Ally X.

I still got one even though I have the original Ally. Mainly because it fixes my main issue with my ally and that's the battery life. Sure I could get a big battery bank and carry that with me or leave it plugged in but I don't like having cords attached to my handelds while I game it's annoying at least to me.

All the rest of the stuff they added is a bonus. I like the better grips as I never felt like the ally was the most comfortable to hold. The extra RAM is nice as we can now just max the VRAM to 8GB and still have almost 16GB left for Windows and the game. Also nice they doubled the SSD I was constantly having to remove games as I'd run out of space. Excited to get mine and get some gameplay videos and comparisons out. But the 22 feels so far away.

The original ally only lasts 50 minutes on any slightly demanding game, and this one will still only last under 2 hours. Not worth it if you want portability

24GB of ram and a huge battery is already a game changer for me. Though I'm holding back for a Switch 2 or Deck 2. Awesome video Rich!

Re-stating my comment from the earlier version:
I kind of miss the catchy end tune/outro you used to put on the end. Made it a nice outro to a nice moment!

Quick correction. It was a board issue not a heating issue. They address this in that gamers nexus video. That’s why some people did not have the issue.

I have an rog ally X on hand and its awesome. they literally fixed every single little thing, and even more. the trigger switches, the usb-C port location, 2x the battery at barely no weight gain, fixed the back paddle switches. and believe it or not, the sleep and resume is MUCH improved, even the joysticks just feel better. the cooling system is improved, the fans even at full blast is perfectly silent. i dont know what kind of black magic asus did but its an awesome super solid device.

I am going to sell my SteamDeck OLED and get the ROG Ally X. It looks like a huge step up. The massive battery, extra USB C, windows os makes it a full-fledged handheld computer on top of a gaming handheld.

And thanks to the abundance of SteamDeck sheep and lack of retail availability, I am getting almost 100% of its price back.

But they changed everything I didn't like about the ally. So yeah, my pre-order stands.

Ally X: Bigger Battery
My Ally: I only play on it for an hour or less at a time. And charging is fast, I'm good

Ally X: Faster and more ram
My Ally: I don't have fps counter turned on so I won't see the 3-7fps difference lol!

Ally X: New I.U, 1tb nvme and upgraded external components
My Ally: I have a 1tb in it already, We are getting the new armory crate and it feels fine as it is right now

When it comes down to it for me to spend an extra $700 CAD ( After selling my ally) it's not going to be worth it

I still feel the Steam Deck is the better of the products, but Asus with its ROG Ally are compelling, especially with how it's been slashing its price point.

Valve for the most part has the quality control, mostly thanks to SteamOS and the price is a bit more compelling, but the hardware is started to get dated, rivals offer better hardware specs and in the case of Asus, the price point is quite competitive, if they sort out the quality control and OS aspect, the ROG Ally would be a better product then what Valve is offering with the Steam Deck, and that gap will widen the longer it takes for Valve to release a Steam Deck 2 or if Valve isn't aggressive enough on slashing prices.

The simple truth is, SteamOS is the main selling point of the Deck, take that out or if rivals have a compelling interface, things could start to change in rival's favour, especially with Asus that have been aggressive on lowering the price point.

I also think this is why Valve are not releasing SteamOS to the market for rivals to use, they likely know it's the main selling point of the Deck, but it's a bit short-sighted of Valve, with SteamOS, they've had a massive opening to shift gamers from Windows to Linux, but they are not taking it by pushing SteamOS to be more open for rivals to use it, in other words, forcing them to make their own solutions through Windows, which are getting better all the time.

Then there is the noise about Microsoft planning on doing a streamlined Windows with a portable interface for these portable devices, if they do and it works well, Linux market share could start to go back in decline because Valve didn't push SteamOS hard enough when they had the chance, and let's be blunt about this, if we have a streamlined WIndows OS and interface, a lot of us will switch back because you will have 100% games compatibility without any of the issues of the translation layer.

Seriously Valve, what on earth are you playing at lol, they've been pushing gaming on Linux for decades now and now they've got an opening to do so that actually works and yet Valve isn't taking advantage of it by pushing hard for market share by trying to get SteamOS on as many devices as possible, I mean seriously, it's been 3 years with no signs of Valve opening up SteamOS to the market, and that one move whiles in the short term is an advantage to Valve with the Steam Deck, it's likely going to backfire on them once Microsoft gets its act together with Windows and then Valve is back to square one with Linux having little to no market share, when you get this kind of opening, take advantage of it as quickly as you can before your rivals wake up, something Valve is clearly not doing and it might already be too late.

Shame it's no OLED, but I'm still perfectly content with my £359 Z1 Extreme Ally👍
