So the new Bowers And Wilkins PX7 S2 is mostly a cosmetic upgrade from the PX7’s. The PX7 S2’s look better, they feel better and they fit better too. Now personally, I enjoy the PX7 S2’s and their more premium build quality and elegant design… but they defiantly aren’t perfect and they aren’t for everyone. But today we’re going to compare the PX7 S2’s to the super feature packed, Sony 1000XM5’s and the Sony 1000XM4’s which aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Having owned both the XM4 and PX7 S2, right out the box the XM4 doesn't sound anywhere as good as the PX7 S2. With careful tuning you can get the XM4 to sound somewhat good, with decent separation and decent soundstage. However, they still don't sound as natural, clear, open and accurate as the PX7 S2. PX7 S2 in my opinion is a more "audiophile" headphone out of the three.

Having both xm4 and xm5 I can agree the xm4s add more comfy. However, the bass I keep hearing youtubers mentioning I find to be not true. Xm5 do hit hard but the bass is more refined. They still pack same amount of punch as the xm4s with more refinement and at louder volumes the bass doesn't become drowned out like the xm4s

At 2023 Thanksgiving, px7 s2 is on sale for $269, xm4 is $249, and xm5 is $329 (with $30 apple gc at costco). Do you have comments based on the sale price?

I think for both companies next gen headphones. That they both could come out with really great models if they flip. Sony would make a hit if they take the xm5 quality and put it in a ps72 look. And B&W would make a hit if they keep their look and import Sony level of quality noise reduction and a 10 band eq.

I have the xm5 from sony and the B&W px7 S2 and I notice the following; I use this for watching TV; both connect very well with the TV and have no interruptions.

The 2 big differences; The B&W has slightly better sound quality, but the Sony has more, or perhaps the best, ear comfort. In the beginning the b&w will hurt the ears, you have to be patient in the beginning, after a certain time the b&w will get better.

I find it a difficult choice between the two ;). They are both so good and one has the advantage of better sound quality and the other has better wearing comfort.

I can't judge anything else, I only use it indoors and to watch TV.

Both are recommended.
But since in Belgium the xm5 costs 339 euros and the b&w costs 229 euros, I think it would be better to go for the b&w.

What I do have in favor of the B&W is charging; If I use a USB-C plug, it does not charge, if I use a USB-A plug it does charge and if I plug it into the PC to charge with the USB-C cable, it also works. It just doesn't work here with a USB-C plug.

The Sony WH-1000XM3 are ~180 EUR in Europe (vs. 430 EUR for the PX7 S2). The M3s have way better ANC, comfort & portability. They have the same battery life, more Bluetooth audio codecs (aptX HD + LDAC) and great, proven, build quality. Hence, it's difficult to justify spending ~250 EUR more for the PX7 S2. They might have better resolution, but the sound quality is still limited by the same technology: Bluetooth. If sound quality is a top priority, there are cheaper wired headphones that sound better than the PX7 S2 (with a good DAC/Amp).
