Through the Arctic region runs the way to the North Atlantic. For NATO and its allies, maintaining a strong presence in the region is vital to protecting trade, transport and communication links between North America and Europe. As climate change melts polar shields and sea levels rise, new sea lanes are beginning to emerge that could pose a threat to Euro-Atlantic security. Greenland is seen by scientists as a "starting point" for climate change. Along with the Faroe Islands, it is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and is therefore under the protection of the Danish Armed Forces. This protection is entrusted to the Joint Arctic Command, a Danish operational command with a central headquarters in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. In this film, a NATO video producer accompanies the Danish Armed Forces in Greenland, at sea, in the air and on land, to learn more about the possible security impacts in the region, and to learn about the capabilities and experiences of NATO ally Denmark in the North Atlantic area.
