As lockdown ended and kids went back to school, in Luton, we examine the devastating impact of overcrowded, unsuitable housing on young lives. The three kids are wise beyond their years.

I escaped poverty as an adult but as a naturally gifted child who outperformed kids academically, athletically, and musically… I saw kids with half the brains and half the talent get ahead because they had the money and the rides I didn’t have. I was even kicked off the sports teams as CAPTAIN for excessive absences due to homelessness and lost all scholarship opportunities. I’ll never forgive my school. I was literally punished for my poverty.

Kids shouldn't have to worry about their parent's financial issues. I didn't even know what bills or rent was until I was until I was like 13/14. It is just terrible that these innocent children have to live like this 😭😭

Watching that little boy crying is heartbreaking. I’ve worked with lots of kids in poverty, and it’s so sad. They don’t get the sleep, nutrition and often support they need to function well throughout the day at school, to learn. 😢

The Saddest Part is the Poverty begets poverty. Most of these kids will live in poverty as adults because it's so difficult to escape it.

This is why I'm so scared of unexpected pregnancies and having children when I'm not truly ready. I know life just happens to people and at times you can't control what happens to you, but seeing these children living in such conditions is so heart-breaking.

My husband escaped the path of poverty ..a mother married again and again to the worst sorts and alcoholic for a father. He escaped because a family relative cared and was there emotionally and for motivation. He became a success and our children as well who know nothing of the life their father had other than the stories. Sometimes it takes someone to just care beyond the basics ..I wish these kids the best of luck ..

It is such a shame that these kids can’t just be kids. I really feel for the children. It’s not their fault they’re put in this predicament. 😢

this is my childhood and still is my life into adulthood, most brutal part is when you're broke you're kind of isolated in society due to no entrance fee, no cultural activities, hobbies, clubs for you, no personal development and socializing much, not even good partner choices since you're loser yourself. It just sucks infinitely. only running behind bread under a huge amount of anxiety of homelessness. constantly, day and night. no fun, no pleasure, no peace. just mental illnesses.

There is tremendous stress on these children that will have long term effects. I hope many of them can break the cycle of poverty. Education is key to success.

I grew up in an immigrant family. Decided to only have 1. I refuse to bring a child into this world if I cannot provide for them. It is my personal belief. I think children are precious and angels and I would love to have an abundance of children but we live in reality. It takes $300k to $ million to raise a child and that doesn’t including the daily grind of feeding and clothing and going through life’s changes and challenges. I have visited orphanages from 3rd world countries and have become a pragmatist. I hope to God these kids will be well taken care of. God bless.

Here in the Philippines, the government doesn’t provide temporary housing or give you money. We also do not have public facilities such as swimming pools, public day care that can cater to your children or universal healthcare. You literally sleep in the streets, under a bridge or live in slums and figure out on your own how to put food on the table. You’re lucky if you have relatives/family who can help. Everywhere in the world it’s heartbreaking to see families especially children experience destitution.
