 The main purpose of the router is to connect multiple networks and forward packets from one network to the next.
Routers typically have multiple interfaces, each one on a different IP network.
This chapter explains the basic configuration of a router using the Command Line Interface (CLI).
The various show commands used to verify and learn information about the router are also presented.
The router has an IPv4 routing table and an IPv6 routing table.
The routing table includes the routes to all known network destinations.
Routes to remote networks are learned by static routes, which are manually configured by an administrator.
Routes to remote networks can also be learned by implementing a dynamic routing protocol.
Examples of dynamic routing protocols are EIGRP and OSPF.
