The 'Rap' section of the song was pre-recorded for the album version. Geddy Lee originally was going to use someone else to do the rap portion, but Geddy Lee digitally changed his voice and did it himself. He would never do it during a live concert because his voice just doesn't sound right for the rap part.

Another underrated song. But no worries rush fans will demand the 11, 000th reaction to Xanadu.

Definitely a top 10 song in one of my top 5 Rush albums. Musicianship aside, take a long, hard listen to those lyrics:

"Faith is cold as ice
Why are little ones born only to suffer
For the want of immunity
Or a bowl of rice?

Well, who would hold a price
On the heads of the innocent children
If there's some immortal power
To control the dice?"

Ok, questions...
1. Why the 2 dryers and a rotating snack machine? Geddy Lee (bass, vocals, keys, pedals, etc...) decided his bass preamp sounded great through the PA straight, so did away with his amplifier backline. Thinking the stage looked "unbalanced" because Alex Lifeson (guitars, pedals, keys (once in a while), and BU vocals) still had his amps, so added "miscellaneous appliances" during the shows since; i.e. dryers, snack machines, popcorn machines, and even chicken rotisseries with supposedly real chickens in them (I doubt this particular rumor). OH! BTW, the DRUM GOD in back is Neil Peart (pronounced Peert) and is considered one of the best (if not the best) in the world. RIP Neil....
2. Was Geddy doing the rap? Yes.
Here's a couple of suggestions..
As you will see, lives are best most of the time but not all...

Geddy does the rapping, microphone is tweaked for it. Alex (guitarist/comedian in his own right) is singing "why are we here" but thinks "why am I here? because I love my job, I'm with my friends and I wanna be here... duh"... lol.. Neil (drummer/lyricist) RIP, we miss you!
I'm glad you liked it... get use to them, they'll be my monthly request for a long time lol <3 Maybe other die hard fans can get in on the action?
This man has a beautiful community... Join up!

I think they use the dryers for ventilation for Neil so he doesn't get overheated. The dryers are set to cool so it works like an air conditioner.

Geddy Lee did the rap part, but the drummer, Neil Peart wrote the lyrics! Geddy is the bass player. They just used an effect, like auto tune on his voice

With Rush, there are too many parts to play while Geddy Lee (bass, keys & vocals) is on stage... so he had to program certain parts like backing vocals to fill the live sound. Neil Peart (drums) also had sample triggers that he could play with a touch of his sticks.
'Roll the bones' was recorded in 1991, just as rap/ hip hop music was starting to take off... so Rush put in a rap section to the song - it was played by programming on stage, but it was basically Geddy rapping, but they slowed down the tape in the studio so his voice got 'deeper' and matched the tempo & beat of the track.

There are so many great songs by Rush, you can't go wrong with any of them. Live versions are always better, but pull the lyrics up for yourself too because Neil's lyrics are poetry.

I was a teen learning to drum when this song came out. I remember reading they wanted to work with a professional rapper when they recorded this. I think it might have been Maestro Fresh Wes. Schedules didn't align and tried a few local rappers that fizzled out.

Great song!! Neil always has a great message in his lyrics. In later concerts, they had several celebrities do the rap piece on the screen vs the skeletons. Like Jason Segal, Paul Rudd, Les Claypool, Peter Dinklage and more. Totally entertaining. The rap pie e is a track for the concert and I'm not 100% but I don't even think it's Geddy on the studio version doing the rap piece. Also, you mentioned lead singers who also play bass and two just popped into my head. Les Claypool from Primus and Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead. 😊
