Unless the knob clicks and can be rotated infinitely. Then it's a rotary encoder which is a fancy switch

The linear transducer knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't, by subtracting where it is, from where it isn't, or where it isn't, from where it is, whichever is greater, it obtains a difference, or deviation.

Wonderful to see a potentiometer large enough to visualise what's going on. Great teaching moment Chris.

Guy I worked with was "degloved" by a Hiedelburg. Nice reference. 10/10.

Weeell, not many people outside the print and certain other industries knows what a "de-gloving" is.
For those who don't know, de-gloving is where you aren't careful around the dangerous moving parts of heavy machinery and strips the skin from your hand like taking off a glove - real fast. Heidelberg is one of the major printing press manufacturers.

Good gawd, my first (of many) Army MOS was 21L- Lithographer, and that Heidelburg joke hit me to the core. The skin glove stays ON the body at all times. Those old printing presses take no prisoners and have no forgiveness for those lacking respect of them.

Thank you for the "vindow viper"comment because my family did a skit probably 60 years ago. It was at church camp and it just brought back a flood of wonderful memories. Again thank you ❤️ your whole channel.

Please make an electronic slide-flute with that, it would be SO awesome.

I had a really old potentiometer built from steel and ceramic with a nice knob to push along a one layered spool of resistor wire. It was nice to play with and got me started into electro-mechanical build and learn kits

Yes, yes I always want to see something cool - especially from you, Chris! :-) Love your videos!

Next, we will discover the difference between a potentiometer and a rheostat😮

We use something similar where I work. We use temposonic transducers in our cylinder shaft to determine position. Its Insane how accurate these things are

I remember the old retro-encabulators had these. The turbo-encabulator was a huge upgrade.

I wish I hadn't looked up what a degloving injury is. whoa

Oof-da. I know about the Heidelberg degloving injuries. I used to run a super old Heidelberg on small print jobs with my dad. Those things are man eaters if you let them be!

Absolutely flawless explanation.
Thank you.

Dammit Boden, you cannot make a reference to a GI Joe cartoon show that my brother and I have already referenced for decades! He’s the viper, he’s here to vipe the vindows! I thought it was very clever when I was 8 and I think you are very clever for bringing it back! BIG thank you for the member berry!

Now it's often magnetostrictive transducers with an integrated fieldbus.
