You won’t believe this crazy Moana theory! Moana’s grandmother was also chosen by the ocean but never had the courage to follow through. The theory is that when she was younger, she had the chance to restore the heart of Te Fiti but didn’t. This made her the wise character we see in the movie, full of knowledge and guidance for Moana. Here are a few points to support this theory:
- The first time we meet the grandmother, she mentions Moana might feel a calling, just like she did.
- She gives Moana a detailed plan to restore the heart: take a hidden boat, follow the star, find Maui, and use specific dialogue to convince him to help.
- The grandmother is obsessed with water and doesn't fit in with the other islanders, much like Moana.
- She constantly guides Moana to break traditions, encouraging her to explore the water.
- Everything she predicts comes true, and she's never surprised.
Based on all this, it seems the grandmother followed a similar path but backed away. The ocean probably gave her the stone, but she couldn’t complete the mission. She then found purpose in grooming Moana to succeed where she had failed.

Nope.
The ocean only chose Moana.
If you remember, the heart was presented to Moana as a child, she however dropped it- leading to it being picked up by the Tala, keeping it safe for Moana to one day fulfil her destiny. If the ocean had chosen Tala, I highly doubt she would have discarded the heart into the sea again, especially as she spends the opening highlighting why restoring the heart is so important.
Nothing you highlighted is evidence, these are all character choices made to show that Tala values the way of life the tribe had before the fall of Te fiti.
