Great review, I heard this was a great book, but having listened to a 5 minute preview, your review confirmed that I'm unlikely to enjoy it. The anthropological side does interest me, but I prefer a more personal perspective. Ursula Le Guin has the right tone for me in this department. Anyone writing like that?

Fabulous ! I read Grace of Kings earlier this year and adored it, can’t wait to get to the rest, thinking of picking Wall of Storms after my current book.

You give a very good pitch for this series ! I completely agree with the dislike for the 'techtalk' but being very impressed with Liu's treatment of political and cultural themes. Those parts are so good ! Even with all the issues I think Speaking Bones had, I still am glad we choose to read these books. It's a impressive series and I'm already looking forward to re-reading the books ( well some in any case)

I am like you and did find this series to have dark content but its tone wasn’t grim dark to me. But I am also all vibes when defining those things 😅

I do want to give this a shot, but I need to finish Malazan and then take a break from heavier books, so probably won't get to it for another 6 months or so.

when the comments are closed and it just shows one comment, it's a spoiler comment when I open the comments ita not at the top... so why did YouTube decide to highlight a spoiler as its chosen comment

William Hope Hodgeson often got distracted by engineering and going into painful detail about stuff (stuff like how much rations a guy would eat every day on a trip). I like a lot of his books, but in general, I skip over engineering.

I just can't with the title of the book... 🤣 Sorry for the off-topic no need to know info here, but the title just translates so poorly into Icelandic (my language). If I directly translate it, it's going to sound like "the idiot kingdom" and let's face it, I directly translated it in my head as soon as I read the title of your video so I would always, always when reading the book... 😂 It sounds interesting though. The plot, that is. ☺

Would you compare this to the writing in like the Silmarillion?

I'm sad I assumed this was full spoilers and didn't listen to it when it first dropped.

I didn't want to start a new series, but from your description, this sounds exactly like something I need to read! I am just now going through Fire and Blood for the second time and I started wondering where I could find something similar.

Definitely want to get into Ken Liu next year, probably starting with the Paper Menagerie. I’m glad you said the engineering stuff didn’t detract from your enjoyment too much even if wasn’t your favorite bit of it, that’s one thing that has made me a bit wary about reading the series.

yeah, I think I feel very similar to you on it (having only read two book so far though) - the cultural/political evolution of the kingdom has been absolutely stunning, it's just it gets bogged down in other modes at times. First book is definitely my favorite thus far, and I'm betting it'll stay that way... but I'm definitely excited to continue.

+1 on 'All the Flavours' too, very much found it akin to Grace of Kings when I read it. Great advice.

Dry and unengaging is a good description. I only read the first book, but it felt way more like a history textbook than Fire & Blood.

This was a perfectly articulated description of this series. Thank you!

Minus the "technotalk" thing, this sounds like The Long Price Quartet. Looking forward to reading it soon.

yes exactly, this series completed something amazing and it's ideas were new and interesting. but I loved the first book, liked the 2nd book, disliked the 3rd, and was bored in the 4th. I dunno. It took me so long to get through the series lmao

I try to decide if I am going to like it as it is 4 books series. I love the ending of your video as to why it is a best recommendation or no-for-you-tipe of book explenation that I experienced till now.👍✨️
I did skip the hoooole middle part to not spoil myself at all.
