One of the main things causing beginners to either give up or never start trying in the first place is worrying about looking inadequate in front of people "more fit" than them. Sit down with Coach Holly for a quick pep talk on why this mentality is holding you back from your best self.

I started running at 5am so nobody would be around. Now I can run any time of day.

I'm never embarassed for a simple reason, that I learned over the years: people rarely care enough about strangers!

One young lady shook my hand after a race and told me "I wouldn't have made it without you". i had no idea what she meant. I was doing the run/walk and reality is I was at a 40 minute 5k. She told me that it was her first 5k and when she wanted to give up, she saw me still going. And I didn't even know that I was helping her. I'm 63, she was about 30. Got to remember there are people all around that are inspired by you no matter what level of fitness or pace

It’s funny...I’m not embarrassed to run outside, but I definitely don’t like looking like I’m struggling when I pass people. This translates into me usually running faster and breathing less when I’m near people and then subsequently dying shortly after when they’re gone. It’s dumb but I struggle to not do that, it’s basically subconscious. I guess I want to appear better than I actually am?

Such a good reminder. Letting go of the thought that others are staring at you and telling yourself that no one cares and you're exactly where you need to be - so freeing.

I’ve always been short and “stocky”, muscular. As I aged, I accumulated body fat at an alarming rate. When I started running, I was 62 and weighed 170 pounds, I’m 5’4”. I was ashamed, embarrassed but kept at it. The more I got into the training, the less I thought about my size. I lost 45 pounds and still enjoy running at 67. I’ve put ten pounds back on but I’m still in good shape and no longer think about how I may look when I’m running. I’ve become less self-conscious in all aspects of my life. I’m happy!

This advice should be applied to more things in life.

It wasn’t until I hit 30 that I stopped worrying about how others might perceive me. It’s such a breath of fresh air on the other side, all that matters is that you’re happy and that you’re doing the best you can in that particular moment.

Everyone’s got opinions, they only hold the power you give them.

I can relate to this ALOT! I often have to remind myself that this is my journey and stopping (if I am oitdoor running) only stands in my way. I am hoping eventually I get better about it. Good for your new client and best of luck to them!

I had no confidence when I started running. I am not fast but I am improving, but more important than that to me is that I have met great people to run with and I feel fitter and healthier (not a runner's physique, but what is that anyway), and am so much more confident. I love running and how it makes me feel. It is my therapy. You've got this, well done for getting out there! 🙌👏You'll never look back, except to say 'why didn't I start sooner'

One of the things that I quickly learned during my 110 pound weight loss journey (now maintaining a healthy weight) is to never compare yourself when in the gym or running out on the road. What people think about you, whether you’re exercising or life in general, is none of your business. Sure, it is not as easy as I paint it but if that sinks in, your confidence level skyrockets. I’ve been there and now I know that.

Hahahahaha 🤣 I've never felt embarrassed running, I only feel embarrassed or jealous when I pass runners in my car. My journey started at 130kg, I would walk 5km in 1hr30-2hr, got shin splints when I started running. That sucked, anyway 95+-kg, 5km in 32min, feeling good. Grateful I just started. Just start, trust.

Aw man this is so important! For anyone struggling with nervousness or worrying about peoples’ judgements (most people don’t even bat an eye by the way) just know that this community is full of people going through the same fears. We all start somewhere and no matter where you are on your journey, we all applaud you. Keep it up and don’t let your fears consume you.

Me. I hate when people see me running, which is why I'll only go early in the morning or late at night. Lol 😌

I am so glad you covered this topic. Even though I know that the people around me are most likely lost in their own thoughts and/or insecurities, I still feel so awkward and weak. Really appreciate your video and information!

This resonated with me as it is a struggle for me at times when seeing other athletes on the street or in the gym. Thank you for sharing this!
