Recreating @andrewhuang's MIDI Unicorn LIVE

Andrew Huang's "Glorious MIDI Unicorn" was one of the videos that most inspired me to start creating MIDI art. My first thought when I saw it years ago was that I'd LOVE to play it live someday. Well, now that I have a few months of experience creating my own MIDI art and performing it live, I decided to give it a shot!

I did have to make a few changes to Andrew's original composition in order for it to be playable with 10 fingers: I had to leave out some of the notes, and also shorten the Unicorn's horn because it exceeded the range of an 88 key piano. I also played it slower than his original tempo - it's very difficult even at this tempo, and would have been almost impossible to play accurately at full speed (lots of hand leaps!).

Big thanks to Andrew for this wonderful composition and for the inspiration!

Technical details: performed on a Yamaha CP88 (using it's internal sound), the DAW is Cubase 11.

WHAT THIS IS SO GOOD I can’t believe you recreated this actually playing it

He counters the notes that actually shape the unicorn with higher pitched notes in the same key to make it sound good. This is dedication. Years of it. I’m proud.

I'm so impressed. I play the piano and produce... I create and interpret midi mapping.. this is impossible.. how? You are a genius.

This guy can draw with a piano better than I can draw with a pencil

This one is a straight up masterpiece! You'd never think it was odd-sounding hearing it at a concert.

it's catchy and it makes a midi unicorn, there is absolutely nothing to not like about this.

this sounds like something a classical composer would write. This is really good 👍👍!

This makes me wonder how many shapes have been drawn throughout the history of music by accident 😱

Bro, why does this sound like an actual song. I never would've thought that a unicorn sounded like a piece of classical music

Thank you for sharing these fairytale themed awesomeness! I've laughed that much after read Andrew Huang's comment in his Instagram story, where he told he composed that MIDI unicorn by the mouse on the computer - and never thought it would be actually playable. Only then I've had a look at the original in-depth video on Andrew Huangs Channel. So GLASYS did another unbelievable thing - not unbelievable for mere mortals & music beginners but also for professionals! It made my day; have a great weekend and all the best :-)!
