O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.

Jesus said "Enter by the narrow gate, those who find it are few." That is not an opinion. It is a statement. The most likely scenario is that of those who are saved the majority will have to be purified as if by fire, as St. Paul says. Never forget that God is infinitely merciful. "There is more joy in Heaven over one sinner doing penance than over the 99 just.! Have a good day, pray, hope and don't worry!

As a sinner, I pray for forgiveness, grace, and blessings from my Lord Jesus Christ. I pray the Triune God shows compassion upon people like me. If I must go to purgatory to suffer my penance, then I am hopeful that it leads me to walking with my Savior. I dream of the day I get to hear the Father Speak, walk with Jesus, and talk with the Holy Spirit. God bless his people.

Wow, Pope Benedict's view sounds quite similar to a Talmudic passage from 1700 years ago which says that after death the entirely righteous will inherit eternal life, the entirely wicked will be eternally rejected, and those in-between "descend to hell and cry out, then they rise up and are healed."

Pope Benedict was such a bright light and gentle soul. Despite his sufferings he was more hopeful than me. Jesus have mercy on me, a sinner.

Another relevant work from the recent Pontiffs is Crossing the Threshold of Hope by Pope St. John Paul II

May God have mercy on our souls, and grant eternal rest to pope emeritus Benedict XVI

It is up to us to pray and make sacrifices to obtain the grace of final penitence for souls who are heading for Hades. Our Lady at Fatima made this clear.

More will be saved than lost but only by way of a purification. Purgatory(The place of purification and justice)

In "Death on a Friday Afternoon: Meditations on the Last Words of Jesus from the Cross" by Richard John Neuhaus, the Catholic author, and former editor of First Things, wrote that Christian charity should compel us to hope that God will save as many persons as possible, just as we would find joy in that others would similarly hope for our salvation. It is not by accident that the Church has officially declared sainthood, but never damnation, as that terrible final condition must be left to God and the sinner him/herself, as we are not to judge souls, even as we must judge right or wrong actions. That does NOT mean we cannot discern between the paths the lead to heaven versus hell, or to see through the life of a person the likelihood that they would either embrace God's love in the next life, such as the sacrificial death of Father Kolbe or the whole family of Józef and Wiktoria Ulma, or almost certainly fall into the black hole of their hatred that builds the very walls of Hell, such as Hilter and those who rejoiced in the death of those same martyrs.

Thanks for this. I remember reading this encyclical, but somehow it did not occur to me that it had this implication of his opinion on the debate over the population of Hell, whether majority of people eternally damned or saved. I guess I read it too fast or did not reflect enough. Interesting. I hope his opinion is right and of course we should all strive to reduce ours and others' purgatory through evangelization, good works, prayer, penance, and indulgences.

Benedict, unlike some, had a great feeling for the mystery of god and, like St Paul and Aquinas, he saw in part and not out of a collection of propositions.

The majority will pass by purgatory but will finally reach heaven. That's also my hope and opinion.
