Well this is only 1' but the vital question of alignment is skipped here. Do the photons that are not perpendicular to the mirrors get absorbed by the non-mirror surfaces? If so then statistically only the ones bouncing between mirrors without ever touching the sides have a chance to create a chain reaction. I also assume that the tube has to be thin enough that we increase the chance of "aborting" any chain reaction alongside a non-perpendicular angle.
