Professional welder here, professional welder approved. Do what you gotta do to get the job done and ergonomics are important when you have a LOT of welding to get done. I like it!

Professional welder here, most important lesson I learnt as an apprentice is that putting a good weld down is about 10% knowledge, 10% technique and 80% just being comfortable.
I approve of this technique.

Professional Fabricator here. If its stupid and it works it ain't stupid. I 100% approve of whatever you need to do to get the result you want. Only tip would be to run your weld into the last one. So same down handing technique but start at the bottom and the do the next weld so that you terminate on the start of the first weld. The less cold start tie ins you have to do the better.

Hold on.... DID YOU JUST MAKE WELDERS AGREE ON SOMETHING!?

Welder here. Position of comfort when welding is core. Also the trade has been using guides forever. Most don't need to use a guide for something that simple, but if it works, it works. Be proud of yourself. I didn't see undercut in your weld's so you're doing a lot better than most.

25 Year active duty US Navy welder here (still active). I’m not going to say a word about the welding, I just want to take a moment and recognize how brilliant Colin is for posting a video calling himself out for a welding technique and asking the internet welders to comment. Well played sir, well played 👏🏼

Retired welding teacher here. That will work fine, only thing you’d have to watch for is the aluminum can act as a heat sink and pull heat out of the weld making it weaker, however what you’re doing is fine. Just turn up the heat a little if you notice a lack of penetration.

Former welder here! Currently in the Henry Ford Clinic for welding addiction. I had welding flash backs just watching this! This has set me back months on my road to recovery! I need to weld something ASAP! I have nightmares about porosity!
Someone send help! 😂⚡️

I have been a welder for 13 years and now am a weld instructor at Caterpillar, and I say its not stupid if it works!

Retired welder here. This will work great. The only thing I would change is putting the angle on and weld from the bottom to the top. Then drop angle down and repeat. This stepped action will keep the steel sheets from getting too hot and bending out of shape. We did this when welding tanks. If you can’t or don’t want to do up hand welding then just mark out the length of the angle and stager the welds. Same results. Good luck.

I do that for all types of lines. Drawing, welding, cutting. It don't matter much if it's straight to curved. A guide is good to have

As a professional electrician, your incidental welds look nicer than my accidental welds.

Professional welder here. No, I don't use a guide for when I'm welding cause I want as few restarts as possible. And I'm able to go very long distances when tig or mig welding without restarts so I would most likely just go the entire length of that weld and only stopping when I reach the bottom.

But I can also say that it is a smart way to do it and I approve the technique, I would just suggest that you use a longer peace next time to not get as many restarts

Welder here. I’ve seen people do it with plasma cutting but never a mig gun before lol. Tbh i don’t see the harm in it. Only comment is aluminum can really suck up heat and may effect your penetration so make sure you’re good there

Another welder here, I use the joint gap, keep a finger tip/knuckle in the v/joint and that's the guide, your method also works .... If it gets the job done and works for you then it ain't stupid

Colin - you are amazing. Everytime I see your skills and know how, I want to throw what I know away. :-)

I'm enjoying these positive, nice comments, what a great support you have, I still can't get over how great of a plumber you are from that one video

Works a treat, but would be much stronger to go up, but down looks better and probably strong enough for that join. Epic project can’t wait to see it finished!

Perfectly legal my guy. No shame in using a guide. Never used myself but a few guys in my old shop would from time to time. If it works it works. Most important thing is to be comfortable and youll make a nice weld everytime. And just personally i like straight passes compared to people trying to lay dimes like how tig comes out. I never saw anyone pass a mig test doing any weaving or jerking to make it simulate tig. Love the content from way back to the furze mobile camper van beans delivery service. Keep up the great work inspiring people to make cool stuff from many ages and places around the world
