You Acting Like a Modern Pagan and Not Realizing it?

You may have noticed “same Spirit” comes up over and over. “Same Lord.” “Same God.” That’s for a couple reasons. For one, the Corinthians lived in a polytheistic society. Many gods. The god of the sun. The god of fertility. The god of war. The god of the sea, of the moon, the harvest, the marketplace, and so on. And evidently, many of the Christians there had once bought into that idea. Paul says, “Some of you were pagans,” led astray to worship idols who cannot speak and cannot help you.

It sounds like an ancient idea, but it’s not unlike today when we have the god of money, the god of career, the god of politics, success, the god of self—all of which are idols that must be shattered in order to worship the one true God. That’s why Paul says again and again, one God, same Lord, the same Spirit does all these things.
