I have 8 foot ceilings. Had 4 ATMOS in the corners and you CAN'T make the illusion of open space above you without a speaker directly above without an absurd amount of cash on very special speakers. The easiest way is placing a pair of ATMOS directly above you. Therefore a 6 channel ATMOS works fantastic on a low ceiling.

Been thinking about your bass pollution problem. I wonder if a cinderblock wall filled with sand between your house and fence would help reduce/absorb the <20 Hz sound waves. Even a row of Italian cypress trees would help break up the waves. Your neighbor could plant some on his side, too.
We were well insulated from traffic noise in our yard until the developer mowed down the trees behind us and added housing.
