Biogas Plant at home.

Managing Waste , more importantly the organic waste generated from the households is one of the biggest problems in the context of urban Cities.

The methane generated from the landfills is another big issue. Methane contributes to the build up of green-house gases and is one of the reasons for climate change .

Decentralization is the only answer to manage organic waste. One of the ways to manage waste locally is to compost it. The other way is to convert the waste into cooking gas.

When the organic matter is fermented (digested) under anaerobic conditions in the presence of temperature , usable methane is formed which can be used for cooking.

The By-product of the fermentation process is nutrient rich liquid fertilizer which can be put to plants and trees.

A bio-gas digester is used for this process. The digester is inoculated with fresh cow dung which makes a conducive environment for the digestion process.

After the retention time of 12 to 15 days , household organic waste can be added to the digester which gives cooking gas and liquid manure everyday.

I am using bio gas since 12 years in kerala. It saves lot of lpg. The stove shown in this video is little old model. The new generation bio gas stoves produces very strong flame. I replace my lpg cylinder once in a year only. The slurry coming out of bio gas plant is a very good organic manure. Using it one can save money spend on fertiliser.Benefits of
Bio gas (1) saves lpg (2) produces more heat than lpg (3) saves money spend for fertiliser if we have a vegetable garden (4) keeps our surroundings clean from organic waste. (5) maintenance free for long years. If using water jacket model bio gas plant we should cover it with mosquito net to avoid mosquito breeding in the water jacket.
