Audre Lorde's The Cancer Journals is a book about deep existential questions. In this short book of essays, diary entries, and reflections, Audre Lorde recounts her cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Lorde sees her illness as a confrontation with her own death. She uses her writing to think through the meaning of her work as a poet in the face of her own mortality.

Thanks for raising awareness about Lorde’s work. I will add this to my TBR list!

Anyone interested in illness narratives might find Lisa Diedrich’s ‘Treatments: Language, Politics, and the Culture of Illness’ illuminating. It examines illness narratives, the subjugated knowledge of patient’s counternarratives and something I find particularly interesting which is the ‘inability’ of language to truly capture ‘scenes of loss’.

(Do I need to say I have no affiliation with Lisa, I just liked the book! 🙂)

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll add Lorde’s book to my (insurmountable) list! Great channel, keep up the good work!

This channel is criminally underrated. Thank you for the efforts.

Ok aside from being first I’m glad you made this video. I thought it was going to be meditation’s, or something from stockdale, but it is this intriguing work that I have never heard of. It already in my cart and I can’t wait to read it. Reflections on death are typically valuable. The last lecture changed the way I view the world, Tuesdays with morrie provided some interesting insights as well. Thanks for the recommendation!
