Thanks for introducing warburton; he was a new name to me.
Beurling was a great shot in civilian life before joining the RAF. He was particularly good at deflection shots. He calculated the speed and distance from Malta's local lizards that would correspond to an aerial shot at a 109, and practiced hunting them with his service Webley.
I believe it was one of his claims that was initially denied because the target wasn't on the gun-camera film. It was outside the lens' field of view. (Off to one side.)
The RAF tried using him as a propaganda hero, but his comments to the Press were so shocking that they decreed "This officer should no longer be exposed to the public", or something very similar.

What a history buff your guest was on that subject. He was very captivating and the story was a class A true tall tell. I had no idea that Malta was any significant part of WWII. Those two pilots were more than amazing and their collective results were more in line with miraculous and beyond natural. I wonder how many aces there were in all of WWII that matched or surpassed there kill records. Could each of them have possibly been a 10+ ACE, 100 and more kills, if they were left in the thick of the fight? Great session. Thanks.

Warby was lucky there was a pilot shortage during the war. Today, there are a lot of young men who love flying but never get the chance to become pilots. 🤠
