You Can 'Catch' Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s isn’t contagious -- at least, in the sense that you can’t catch it from being around somebody who has it. But, it turns out, it is transmissible, just not directly.

So, now i've learnt that Alzheimer's and Cancer can be "contagious" if the right conditions are met... as creepy as it is, i am glad we are now aware of it.

This must be some kind of world record: The most mentions of prions and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease without bringing up Mad Cow disease (BSE) even once.

I feel a lot of people could go into a panic by lookinng at the title without actually watching the video.

Shit, my workplace involves a ton of mind-to-mind scrubbing. Guess I gotta wear a condom on my head from now on.

I've worked with alzheimer patients for a long time myselve, so hearing that tgis disease is spreadable is both interesting and frightening. Alzheimer is something you wouldn't even wish your worst enemy.

That's scary - so it's not safe to eat human brains anymore?

From my understanding, it has yet to be determined whether amyloid beta is the cause of Alzheimer's (as a toxic buildup) or is the byproduct of some other process happening that causes Alzheimer's (and is therefore not directly causing the condition).

Okay, who's the doctor putting inadequately sterilized electrodes into people's brains?

I hope you guys do a video on FTD (frontotemporal dementia). It hits people young, is fatal, and has no treatment. My husband has it now.

Scishow should do a video on the science of plastic. I've always wondered what makes plastic behave the way it does, why exactly is it non biodegradable, and what is it made of? Many people including myself would be grateful if you did.

I received my master's of neuropsychology specifically to work in the field of dementia research. That was in 1991 when we didn't understand the pathology of Alzheimers disease. We now know so much more about the progression of it that we can make more accurate predictions of the aggressiveness of individual cases and the cause at the genetic level that allow us to determine predisposition and probability of onset but still can't directly diagnose it. It is diagnosed by ruling out other causes and definitively diagnose at post mortem examination. Sadly, at this point in time prion diseases cannot be reversed or cured and is always fatal.

Well, that's horrifying.

*sigh*

Alzheimer's runs in my family, so even though I haven't had the HGH thing, I may get it anyway.

Ooo I'm doing my dissertation on this, I'm happy to see how relevant this topic is becoming. If anyone knows any good papers on this, I'd appreciate links :)

It remains unclear whether the Amiloids are cause or symptom. Scientists tried to find treatments against them, but whatever they developped so far did not even slow the disease down. It could be thus more of a symtom than the actual cause.
