Viewing distance is obviously a key factor, but as someone who is currently using the old Thunderbolt Studio Display as a secondary display, I can clearly see pixels at my normal viewing distance. It's a clean, quality, color accurate image, but for anyone who's been using Retina anything for the past ten years, you have to notice the difference. It's hardly a compelling reason to rush out and buy a 5K Studio, but comparing the two together is an Apples and Oranges comparison.

The minor upsides include the USB A ports for old peripherals and external drives, not that using dongles in a fixed space is a big deal, but they do free up USB C ports for faster, current devices. And the other minor upside, which is more of a design head scratcher for the 5K Studio Display, is a removable power plug. Seems like a blaring oversight that Apple didn't use the handy MagSafe power plug from the M1 iMac.

The most essential difference was completely left out of this review: colour gamut. There is a huge difference in the amount of colours the Studio Display can handle versus the amount the Thunderbolt Display can take. This is essential for photo and video editing. I can see that huge difference because I have hooked up a Thunderbolt Display to a 27inch 5K Retina iMac (with the same panel as the Studio Display as reported). Apart from the huge difference in resolution, the number of shades of colours that the Thunderbolt Display can display are far inferior to the ones the 5K Retina Display or Studio Display can show me, especially in the reds and greens. The Studio Display has a far wider colour gamut than the Thunderbolt Display. That, together with the higher resolution, is the main factor for the difference in price.

I got one of these in near-new condition for £150. Absolutely love it. It does everything I need it to do, and looks great on my desk too. Definitely recommend.

Where can I buy the thunderbolt displays? Are these brand new or something used on eBay?

Do you think its possible to replace the thunderbolt's inner panel with a 5k imac lcd panel? It would basically be a studio display at that point lol

I use a Thunderbolt and I think it is perfect for my setup! I still use a retina MBP 15 so the Magsafe built-in is really handy for me! the ethernet and USB hub are also super convenient as my office has very poor wifi reception, so being able to plug in only 2 cables and have all peripherals, monitor, power, and internet just work is fantastic! It also lets me have a dedicated charging place in my house so I can keep my power adapter in my bag for travel.

you can hang an iphone on the thunderbolt display to get centerstage as well. thunderbolt is great! If you buy one used its worth spending some time cleaning the internals they get quite dusty and then run hot

Curious what the speaker difference sounds like when you challenge it with musical scores. Voice doesn’t really tell much about the sound difference. Would you use it for editing? Bet you’d enjoy editing on a 5k display more than on a 2.5k

I am planning on getting the iPhone 13 mini in 2022 because I like how much you get so much in a budget phone I hope I get it.

I’m looking at buying either a Mac Mini or a 24” iMac.

I’ve got two Thunderbolt monitors, with the same adaptors, love them…. I use my iphone continuity camera using a little stand that goes on the top of the monitor for daily teams calls, this setup works perfectly. And the difference in picture quality is huge, I get lots of compliments about the clarity of my webcam all the time.

Thank you for the video. Could you please be more specific about the alternative display you are recommending? What is the actual Apple model number? I have a couple of older Apple Thunderbolt displays but I’m not sure they are the same based on the ports on the back so model number would be a huge help. Take care.

I definately dont see the need for a 5k display at that price vs a 2k display for $300. To me it’s a no-brainer. Save some cash and get a new iPhone… Speaking of which, I got to get myself a new phone very soon. I am still using my old trusty iPhone6… yes, thats right, so, I am planning on getting a new iPhone in July. I just can't decide on the (now more affordable) iPhone12, or the (soon to be more affordable) iPhone13. What would your recommendation be?

I made a video about opening up the Thunderbolt Display and modernizing it with USB-C. I'm using dual Thunderbolt Displays with my M1 Mac Pro, just two USB-C connections, no dongles on the desk, and couldn't be happier!

I got myself a 27 inch Thunderbolt Display yesterday with my better half, the Thunderbolt adapter might arrive in a few hours. I'm really curious about the image and color accuracy on these older devices. I have a Dell 27 inch wide gamut (a-rgb) monitor, but I was never quite satisfied with it tbh. And after working with the monitor for almost 6-7 years I realized I DONT need the wide gamut. S-rgb is the way to go for me since I do not do a lot of printing nowadays!
