After the R landslide in '80 that took put liberal stalwarts like Bayh, Church, and McGovern; we badly needed someone like Harkin to fill their shoes. He did, and with aplomb! He was my first choice for pres in my first pres election- 1992.

Loyalty might have been a factor in Tom's support for Mondale, but going with a winner must have been a factor, as Mondale won Iowa with almost 50% compared to 15% for runner up. How about '04? Harkin hardly knew Dean (remember when he refred to him twice as John Dean a year earlier??) but went for him over Gephardt and Kerry, with whom he had served in congress for years
