It brings back memories to me. I and my mother visited Novgorod Veliky in 1984. A beautiful town. We stayed in an old wooden hotel in the center of the town, and I remeber the river, the city wall, the monument of 1000 years of Russian history and other things. I am Swedish, and I love Russia. Actually (which not many people know, ) our king Carl XVI Gustaf is a descendant of Peter the great, Pjotr Aleksejevitj himself, through one of Paul I:s daughters, Maria Pavlovna, who is his grandfathers grandmothers grandmother. (And in turn the tsars, from Peter III and onwards, were partly of Swedish descent. 🙂 A lot of links between Sweden and Russia. I also remember one fine summer evening having dinner in a so nice restaurant in built in the city wall of Novgorod, eating some Russian speciaity. (However since that time I´ve become vegan, so I hope there is vegan food in Novgorod too, because I hope so much one day to return to Russia and Novgorod, when tragic things in the world have changed and when it is peace again. I remember booking a hostel in Velikiy instead of Nizhny. But they were nice and cancelled my booking without any extra charge. But looks like, I should this time I should book one intentionally :-)

Velikiy Novgorod is not oldest city in Russia! It is the oldest city of Kievan Rus(it is first Russian country).
