Here we have the next train screen at Carrbridge for the 1342 departure for Inverness. The screen is advising passengers that the train is very busy and suggesting they may need to wait 3 hours for the next train! That would be shining bright! Class 170s should not be operating in single formations on the Highland Mainline, EVER!

No surprise from past weekend travelling between Perth & Aviemore, HSTs running mid-morning on a Friday then on Saturday with rugby / football events put on a 170 and a 158 !!

I have even seen a single 158 on a Glasgow to Inverness service a few years ago.

I'm a bit of a fan of ScotRail but living in GWR territory that is no surprise! However, the notice you highlight is indicative of the downside of automated PIS information as it seems it cannot distinguish between, say, Haymarket and a more remote station such as Carrbridge. One thing that I do find grossly misleading on ScotRail is the advertising of certain Glasgow Queen Street to Inverness trains that in go via Aberdeen rather than over the Highland main line. The practice of combining, in this case, a Glasgow QS to Aberdeen service and an Aberdeen to Inverness service is ridiculous. I wonder if many passengers have been caught out when their train turns right at Perth. Also, if you spend any length of time at stations with an infrequent service e.g Dalwhinnie you still get an incessant stream of announcements about fare evasion, security and so on. Passenger information has moved on significantly in recent years but does need some fine tuning.

Should either be two 170's coupled together, a 170 with a 158 or should be a HST service.
Thankfully when I went on a single 170 to Inverness back in the summer, it was busy but wasn't overcrowded or anything.
I'd say it's about the same as the Harrogate Line in Yorkshire with their 170's.

I was in Pitlochry last year and there were people getting the train back to Edinburgh. An announcement was made that the train has broken down past Dalwhinnie. They couldn’t be sure if a replacement bus was going to be provided and advised passengers to travel tomorrow

Carrbridge is a place that wouldn’t work. I think though they’re might be a 430 as well. I went there last week and my grandparent had to drive me back to Aviemore. The station is also not in Carrbridge which isn’t amazing. I know it’s only half a mile but on comparison to Aviemore it is quite far ever to the bridge.

I visited Scotland recently, spent some time in Pitlochry and took the train to Inverness and Edinburgh. Trains were never too full... if they arrived at all. The amount of cancellations was staggering

You don't say what day this happened, but if it was a weekday, you could always have taken the 37 bus to Inverness - OK, you've just missed the 13.22 but there is one at 14.22.
