“I just hope both teams have fun.” Love the sentiment. Indeed.

It's probably because whatever strongman event Brian is preparing for requires only that range of motion and needs to be explosive. Atlas Stones come to mind. They usually grip it and sit back to a position similar to the box depth there then explode it up onto the pillar.
Chains help add resistance at the top to train more of that lockout strength.
(I'm a complete casual, so my opinion is practically worthless, just speculating)

Remember…Mike specifically references muscle size/growth here. Don’t get caught up defending against points he isn’t making.

You don’t do them for muscle size, they’re to develop strength and power 🙄
jimbob-bcbk
Strength training is not hypertrophy training and is done differently. Doesn't make it wrong
marinaelhaybe
The chains are actually a good idea WITHOUT the box, because of you have difficulty getting low and coming back up, it removes weight as you drop.

Box squats are pointless for most people. However Brian isn’t most people.
wickywills
Do keep in mind he said muscle SIZE not STRENGTH. Box squats along with bands/chains are excellent strength builders.

Box squats are great for runners coming back from injury or sprinters trying to push themselves to break a PR, I started doing them because I watched a video of a 180lbs Olympic sprinter box squatting 4 plates. They’re not the only exercise or the best exercise, don’t mistake what I’m saying

Box squats remind of the GameCube. I always remember playing auper Mario Sunshine on that thing. Definitely the best 3d Mario

I damaged cartilage in both knees over the summer and i am only just getting back to squatting but still cannot get to deep squat even without weight. I am finding box squats great to build leg and knee strength again. Any advice?
dendoy
I've had back surgery so this is good with me.

Leg drive for deadlift is why he is doing it. Either that or it is for squat event. Box might help him get to 90 degrees but i think in this particular vid it was for assistance for the deadlift.
hooskerdoo
Brian doesn’t need muscles to grow or get bigger, he needs to gain strength.
soakedbearrd
Good video for general muscle growth information, but this is like analyzing running a marathon or 1rm snatch for muscle growth.

Being about as flexible as a frozen rubber band I avoid deep squats like I avoid getting roped into meaningful conversations about my feelings.
exvius
Most people can’t do a deep squat, I find box squats perfect for me.
david-pbbi
Box squats could possibly limit muscles under tension.

Yes, those partial reps from bottom position also known as torture. 😅 But yeah. They're great and we're not in the gym to be comfortable.
