I always loved this song because of the mandolin. It adds a really cool "haunting" sound to the song. The music was written by Peter Buck after he bought a mandolin and tried to learn how to play it. He came across the "riff" that is throughout the song. Not sure who wrote the lyrics but Michael Stipe claims the song is about romantic expression and how someone pines for someone else. "Losing My Religion" is a colloquial Southern expression that means losing my temper so I'm not sure how that squares with "how someone pines for someone else." If you can understand that, please explain it to me in the comments. We hope you enjoy our cover.
This was the most popular song for REM. It topped out at #4 on the BillBoardHot100 and stayed on the charts for 21 weeks in 1991. The album sold over 10 million copies.
Chad is the new kid on the block. He is playing an outstanding 2005 Gibson mandolin for this one. He was a welcome addition to the "Live From The Kitchen Counter" crew. Frank is killing it on vocals with Gordon on drums and John playing my sweet 1994 Gibson Hummingbird and me playing my awesome 1997 Bourgeois Country Boy.
