I live in a town along the Mississippi that was once the pearl button capital of the world. We once had oysters and mussels galore filling the river, and then they were hunted almost to extinction. It takes one hundred years for a bed of oysters or mussels to grow to the size needed to restore the Mississippi to it's former cleanliness and grandeur, so although pearls are beautiful, I have a deep distaste for things made of them because I know the destruction of removing one single oyster or mussel from it's natural habitat. If you don't know what I mean, research how oysters, mussels, and clams help filter water. One additional point I would like to make, though, is that Mississippi mussels only live 60-70 years, but in the time it takes for them to reproduce, it can take hundreds of years for them to build up a large enough population to have a filtering bed.

Isn't that the company that abuses axolotls as advertisements. Like, taking them out of water, cramping them in a tiny space and aggressively dropping them against hard concrete

Or is it another company that sells the same product—

The poor oyster man... there are more sustainable painless ways of pearl collecting!

Idk how I feel about clams being used as pearl factories. Like, your farming a living animal, irritating it’s insides so it produces a pearl, and sending them out to people to be killed and ripped apart all for the amusement of people. Idk, it just seems really wrong. And I’ve seen YouTube channels that are dedicated to opening hundreds of them.

Humans really, really don’t value animals as things that are alive.

Why do I feel bad for the oyster-

I mean its a living being

*( okay ya’ll. i dont care if they don’t feel anything or its dead. No I’m not a vegan. i simply said what I felt and ya’ll cant change that. if I feel bad then I feel bad. So please stop making drama in the comments. My feelings is my feelings.)*

So, the oyster is killed for "fun", not even food... On the same level as those gold digging blocks of sand.
Feels wrong somehow.

No one said that oysters feel pain. The fact that she bought a real living animal just to put a nice pearl in a necklace is concerning. Before you jump all over me with comments defending Katie just watch how natural pearls are extracted and how this effects our oceans’ ecosystems.
PS: I like Katie too and watch her videos. I just don’t encourage watching this and buying natural pearls.

Update: since everyone is giving their opinion about oysters and how they are just ‘animals’ I considered necessary to explain the situation a bit. Yes. They feel pain and even get stressed. The result of these sensations or feelings is the pearl inside them. A pearl is a result of a natural defense mechanism against an irritant in the sea. They cover the irritant with many layers of ‘nacre’ until the pearl is formed.
People tend to say that they don’t feel pain because they don’t have a developed nervous system but it’s not true. They most probably don’t feel the pain with much intensity but it doesn’t mean they don’t feel anything. And don’t include in this category all shells because the lack of central nervous system doesn’t apply for all.
And don’t you ever say an animal is just an animal. This goes against our nature. We should respect everything around us. We don’t own this planet 🌍. We share it with other living creatures. We borrow its resources. The least we can do is to protect it.

I may not know much about marine life, and I'm assuming this person doesn't either, but I cannot think that the oyster is alright.

My brother gave me on of those a few months before he passed away. I was 11 at the time and didn't realize how important it was. Now, I cherish it and wear it everyday 🙏💜
