It's because there are miles and miles of salt mines underneath Michigan. Some of the largest in the world. There has been already tons of nuclear/radioactive waste stored there for years. Salt is actually one of the best natural containers for radiation, and radioactive wastes. Just science. It's literally the safest place on earth to store such substance.

This seems like a lot of people that grew up hearing about the mismanagement of Chernobyl and the "Disaster" at Three Mile Island and then Fukushima. Radiological waste is tightly managed and is typically stored in Reinforced underground structures. This should pose zero threat to any community or the environment of managed properly

It amazes me that polluters choose sites near water.

It's probably because Detriot sits atop of a very large salt mine. That's one of the safeset places to store that waste. Apparently the local residents are aware of the city's history, besides the auto manufacturing there was also salt mining.

The number of people that are severely under informed about nuclear energy or radiation sources… is alarmingly high. Most of the storage would at most give you a problem IF you were sitting on top of the actual source (notwithstanding items like Cs-137, Co-60, etc.) most storage is safe, and even if there is an issue, there are procedures to mitigate the release.

seems like putting radiation in the waters near Detroit is someone trolling

Seriously though, unless there is a horrible accident there isn't much to worry about. But they probably said that about WuHan too.... One of those.. I don't want it in my back yard but in your back yard its pretty safe (/s)

Like Umatilla Oregon where they have shipped and store nuclear waste in metal drums that are leaking into the Columbia River that runs straight into the pacific ocean.

How many millions of dollars spent building a safe deposits place for nuclear power plant waste in a area that is free of earthquakes and over groundwater? Why isn't it that waste going there?
