JH was one of the greatest and I would say, as a former player, soooo influential on many. About 12 years ago I met his bass player, whom he started with in the army and who also played with him in the experience, Billy Cox. Nice man and still at it now at 80!

Been a Hendrix fan since before I was born, back in 1984 I was lucky enough to spend some time with Jimi`s father, Al Hendrix and his stepmother June when they came to England for a Hendrix convention, even ended up staying in the same hotel (West Retford Hotel) had a lot of long chats with him and even had a meal out with them, he paid !, a really nice chap with a lot of stories. Managed to get invited backstage at the concert and there I met Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and a few others I can`t remember.

Jimi was the GOAT. Recommend listening to the studio version (first), if possible. A lot of his music is "guarded" from being online by his estate. The absolute greatest guitar playing of all time is Jimi's "Machine Gun" live at Fillmore with his "Band Of Gypsys" group. Worth a listen!

Jimi Hendrix was the great guitarist that other great guitarists of that time looked up to. He was an amazing performer known for great guitar riffs, and playing the guitar behind his head, behind his back, between his legs, and with his teeth. They were only 3 musicians, but it was like there was a wall of sound. His performances got pretty wild at the end when he often smashed his amplifiers and guitars. I saw one of his concerts in Chicago in the late 1960's. At that concert he lit his guitar on fire at the end. I never enjoyed watching that, but it was an amazing experience to see him perform live. Great reaction.

Check out Hendrix's Star Spangled banner at Woodstock. It's an easy to find video because the recording is literally a document of historic importance, capturing a critical moment in the anti-Vietnam War movement. Even Jimi's notoriously stingy estate understands that to some extent. It's just the melody - no vocals - but his guitar soundscape gives the lyrics a totally different message from what's intended.

Mitch Mitchell is among the greatest drummers of all time, and he doesn't get nearly enough credit. I guess when you're a backing player to Jimi Hendrix, you don't get as much press as a drummer who's a member of a band like The Who or Led Zeppelin.
