Hey folks, seeing several comments about this isn't "off meta" because they have seen Kassadin do well before. While its true Riftwalk is reliable, many top players believed this augment is not very good. Only a few people ever actually play this comp despite knowing what its capable of. The fact that Appies picked it in a tournament in a spot that was quite unusual made it worthwhile for me to cover. Don't worry -- we'll make sure to be more specific about titles and whatnot to ensure it doesn't feel like we're saying things that aren't true. The point of the video was to show people how to play comps like Riftwalk, which is really neat augment that you'll see tons of people pass up.

I think one thing overlooked in the VOD review was the purposeful placement of Kassadin in a spot where he took aggro at the start of the fight. I think he felt comfortable doing this due to the BT slam early in game that gives the extra omnivamp and shield if needed. This takes a lot of damage off the board from his opponent in most of his late game fights.

21:32 I would point out that one has to be cautious when looking at those statistics, correlation does not mean causation. Getting 6 Bastion means having a K'Sante for which you usually have to survive longer in the game and naturally have a better placement.

Kind of the same logic as checking which items have the best average placement, which are Zephyr, Shroud and other supportive/utility items, because thats the stuff you tend to pick later in the game, doesn't mean you have to slam it early :D

Nice video as always. I have a question, is calling out what u play at the start of the game is a pro players thing or is it a common thing. Cause i don't see it much in my gold-plat lobby.

This is an honest question, why would you ever declare your comp? Isn't that similar to a sports team telling the other team what plays they will be running?

6:04 Is quicksilver actually BIS on riftwalk Kassadin? I would think that it would be pretty garbage since he isn't reliant on auto attacks at all and by the time the cc ends he will be ready to instant cast right when the cc ends; Why wouldn't 2nd hoj, bloodthirster, gunblade, or even guardbreaker be way better than quicksilver on Kassadin as a 3rd item?

Am I too low to understand this but do people really call dibs on builds in higher elo? That sounds so silly too me.

22mn: your interpretation of the statistics is wrong, there is survivorship bias in there. You can't conclude as easily.

Not to give a full course, but let's explain quickly what I mean: in order to get 6 bastions, you need Ksante. This means that the 6 bastions comps are comps that didn't lose early. The 4 bastions stats comprise games in which the people aimed for 4 bastions, as well as games where people wanted the 6 bastions but either lost early or didn't hit. the reason 6 bastions seems to perform better than 4 bastions may come fro the fact that you need to have a good game in order to show 6 bastions.

The bottom line is that with the stats that were shown alone, it's impossible to conclude whether 6 bastions is really better than 4. It could very well be though (and I would tend to believe it's true).

If you want to read more about it, the wikipedia article on survivorship bias has plenty of small illustrative examples .

Its not off-meta, just that you are not guaranteed to get the augment to play it every game. Warwick and kassadin augment just op
