Robert Downey was a steal at the time:

- for those who knew of him before MCU, we knew he was a great actor when he was sober and not causing problems. We had last seen him in Alley McBeal where he had a great but short stint.
- he was needing a second chance cause of all his legal issues so he was on his last legs of his career in Hollywood if he didn’t shape up. Meaning you could get him for pennies on the dollar compared to Tom Cruise. As long as you paid his insurance.
- and he looked a bit like his comic book counterpart. Now comic books are drawn to make Tony resemble RDJ.
